Spencer Bonadventure Tracy (1900–67) was an American actor renowned for his naturalistic style and his ability to portray multifaceted characters.
Born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Tracy honed his craft at the Northwestern Military Academy, Ripon College, and the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. He made his Broadway début in A Royal Fandango (1923) before transitioning to film with his début in Up the River (1930.)
Initially typecast as a tough guy and gangster, Tracy’s versatility and commitment to authenticity earned him a reputation as one of Hollywood’s finest. Throughout his career, he received nine Academy Award nominations, winning for his roles in Captains Courageous (1937) and Boys Town (1938.)
