Inspirational Quotes by Baba Hari Dass (Indian-American Hindu Yogi)

Baba Hari Dass (1923–2018,) devotedly called Babaji (Sanskrit: “respected father”) by his disciples, was an Indian-American Hindu silent monk and spiritual leader. He motivated thousands of followers out of the Mount Madonna Center near Watsonville, California.

Born in Almora, in the foothills of the Himalayas in India, Babaji left his home at age 8 to become a monk. Becoming a revered yogi and an ascetic in his own right, he built followership in India. He accepted a vow of silence in 1952, conversing only through writings. He dispensed terse-yet-profound utterances on a small chalkboard to those seeking his advice.

Babaji immigrated to America in 1971 at the invitation of two American students and began teaching yoga and meditation. He attracted disciples when his student Richard “Ram Dass” Alpert published Be Here Now (1971.) Babaji’s followers instituted the nonprofit Hanuman Fellowship in 1972 and founded the Mount Madonna Center in 1978.

Babaji wrote Ashtanga Yoga Primer (1977) and The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali (3 vols., 1999–2013.) His collection of aphorisms includes The Yellow Book (1974,) Silence Speaks (1977,) and Fire Without Fuel (1986.) His autobiography is Path Unfolds (2019.)
