Inspirational Quotes by Pericles (Athenian Statesman)

Pericles (c.495–429 BCE) was the leading statesman of Athens for an unprecedented period, 446–429 BCE; its now called Periclean Age. He brought Athens to the height of its political power and its artistic achievement.

Born into the aristocratic Alcmaeonid family in Athens, Pericles became the dominant figure in Athenian politics, being elected 15 times to the office of strategos (a general, but with political functions) from 451 BCE.

Pericles was mostly responsible for advancing Athenian democracy and the Athenian empire, making Athens the political and cultural focus of Greece. His achievements included the construction of the Parthenon, the Propylaea, and other buildings on the Acropolis, which began in 447.

Pericles enjoyed the company of the poets and intellectuals of the day, including Sophocles, whose friend he was.

Anticipating war with Sparta, Pericles initiated the catastrophic Peloponnesian War (431–404 BCE,) but, at its outset, died of the plague that struck Athens.
