Inspirational Quotes by John Osborne (English Playwright, Actor)

John Osborne (1929–94,) fully John James Osborne, was an English playwright and actor. He is celebrated for his excoriating prose and intense critical stance towards established social and political norms.

Born in London, Osborne joined Belmont College, Devon. He hated it and left after striking the headmaster. At age 16, he became a copywriter for trade journals. He turned actor in 1948 and, by 1955, was playing leading roles in new plays at the Royal Court Theatre, London.

Osborne’s fourth play, Look Back in Anger (1956; film, 1958,) and The Entertainer (1957; film, 1960,) Sir Laurence Olivier playing Archie Rice, established Osborne as the leading young exponent of British social drama. The ‘hero’ of the first, Jimmy Porter, the prototype ‘Angry Young Man,’ and the pathetic, mediocre music hall joker Archie Rice echo the author’s severe hatred of outworn social and political institutions and attitudes.

Among Osborne’s other works are Luther (1960,) Inadmissible Evidence (1965,) Time Present (1968,) and The Hotel in Amsterdam (1968,) and the film script of Tom Jones, which won him an Academy Award (1963.)

Osborne wrote his philosophy in Declarations (1957) and three volumes of autobiography, A Better Class of Person (1981,) Almost a Gentleman (1991,) and Damn You, England (1994.)

Drama critic John Heilpern wrote the famous John Osborne: A Patriot for Us (2007.)
