Jimmy Buffett (b.1946,) fully James William Buffett, is an American singer, songwriter, musician, author, and businessman.
Born in Pascagoula, Mississippi, Buffett got his start in Nashville’s country music scene. A trip to Florida’s Key West transformed his musical style into a mixture of country, folk, rock, and coastal sounds. Buffett is celebrated for his autobiographical ballads that depict an “island escapism” lifestyle. His Coral Reefer Band has recorded hit songs, including “Margaritaville” and “Come Monday.”
Buffett has transformed his music career into various commercial ventures. He is the best-selling writer of Tales from Margaritaville (1989) and A Salty Piece of Land (2004.) He is involved in two restaurant chains, Margaritaville Café and Cheeseburger in Paradise, named after two of his best-known songs.
Buffett has formed Margaritaville Records (a subsidiary of MCA Records,) Radio Margaritaville, and a Margaritaville Casino. He remains a major concert attraction, specifically in Florida, where his devoted fans among aging hippies are affectionately dubbed “Parrotheads.”
