Inspirational Quotes by Ben Okri (Nigerian Novelist, Poet)

Ben Okri (b.1959) is a Nigerian-born British-based novelist, short-story writer, and poet. Considered one of the foremost African authors in the post-modern and post-colonial traditions, he is celebrated for using lavish language and magic realism to convey the social and political chaos in Nigeria.

Born in Minna, Nigeria, Okri was inspired by his mother’s mysterious way of telling stories. His first novel was the precocious Flowers and Shadows (1980,) published when he was nineteen. He gained recognition with the publication of Incidents at the Shrine (1986; Commonwealth Writers Prize for Africa) and Stars of the New Curfew (1988.)

Okri’s career began a new phase with his third novel, The Famished Road (1991; narrated by the spirit-child Azaro; Booker Prize) and the sequel, Songs of Enchantment (1993.) Okri’s later novels include Astonishing the Gods (1995,) Birds of Heaven (1995,) A Way of Being Free (1996,) Dangerous Love (1996,) Infinite Riches (1998,) and In Arcadia (2002.) His poetry includes the collections An African Elegy (1992,) Wild (2012,) and Rise Like Lions: Poetry for the Many (2018.)
