Inspirational Quotes by John McCain (American Politician)

John McCain (1936–2018,) fully John Sidney McCain III, was an American Republican-party politician who served as a congressional representative 1983–87 and senator 1987–2018 from the state of Arizona.

Born in the Coco Solo Naval Air Station in the Panama Canal Zone to a family that had a long pedigree in the U.S. military, McCain grew up on naval bases in the United States and abroad. He spent 22 years in the U.S. Navy, including five-and-a-half years as a prisoner of war in Vietnam.

As a United States congressional representative and later senator, McCain sparred with his conservative party’s right-wing on a variety of issues. He was well regarded for his straightforwardness, and he acquired a reputation as a political “maverick.” He was a high-ranking voice on defense and foreign policy in the U.S. Senate.

McCain ran unsuccessfully for the Republican presidential nomination in 2000, losing to George W. Bush. McCain was his party’s contender for president in 2008 but was defeated by Barack Obama.

Noteworthy biographies of McCain include Robert Timberg’s John McCain: An American Odyssey (1999) and McCain’s coauthored volumes, Faith of My Fathers (1999,) Worth the Fighting For (2002,) Hard Call: Great Decisions and the Extraordinary People Who Made Them (2007,) and Why Courage Matters: The Way to a Braver Life (2004.)
