Rene C. McPherson (1924–96) was an American business executive. He was the chairman and CEO of the Dana Corporation 1972–80 and dean of the Stanford Business School 1980–82.

Born in Akron, Ohio, McPherson was a highly decorated bomber pilot in World War II. He received the Distinguished Flying Cross for his service in the Pacific 1943–45. He graduated from the Case Institute of Technology in 1950 with a BS degree. He earned an MBA from the Harvard Business School in 1952.

In 1952, McPherson joined Dana Corporation as a sales engineer, the Toledo-based producer of automobile components and industrial products. He rose quickly through the ranks and was elected vice president of the corporation in 1968, chairman of the board and chief officer in 1972.

McPherson introduced progressive policies on management and employee relations. He also decentralized the corporate bureaucracy and established policies that vested power in each division, allowing managers to operate their own “mini-companies,” sharing essential decision-making and problem-solving experiences with senior corporate management. McPherson led Dana to become one of America’s best-run companies.

McPherson also served on numerous corporate boards, including the BankAmerica Corporation, the Boeing Company, the Manufacturers Hanover Corporation, and Dow Jones & Company.
