Inspirational Quotes by Edward Bouverie Pusey (British Anglican Theologian)

E. B. Pusey (1800–82,) fully Edward Bouverie Pusey, was a British Anglican theologian, and scholar. He was a leader of the “Oxford Movement,” which began at Oxford in 1833 to revive in Anglicanism the High Church ideals of the later 17th-century church.

Born in Pusey, Berkshire, England, Pusey was educated at Eton and Christ Church, Oxford. In 1828, he was ordained deacon and priest and was appointed Regius Professor of Hebrew at Oxford, a position which he retained until his death. He joined Cardinal John Henry Newman, and they, with John Keble, became the leaders of the Oxford Movement (1833.)

Pusey wrote his contributions to the Tracts, especially those on Baptism and the Holy Eucharist, and in 1836 commenced the Oxford library of the Fathers, to which his chief contributions were translations of Saint Augustine’s Confessions and works of Tertullian.

In 1843, Pusey was suspended from preaching in Oxford for two years following a sermon where he asserted the presence of God in the Holy Eucharist, but at the first opportunity, he reiterated his teaching. His numerous writings during this period include a letter on the practice of confession (1850) and a general defense of his position titled A Letter to the Bishop of London (1851.)

Pusey also wrote The Doctrine of the Real Presence (1856–57,) the series of three Eirenicons (1865–69,) and a pamphlet on Collegiate and Professorial Teaching (1854.) He spent large sums in helping to provide churches in East London and Leeds, and in founding Anglican sisterhoods.

The Pusey House in Oxford, founded by Pusey’s friends two years after his death, preserves his library and some personal effects.

Think nothing too little; seek for the cross in the daily incidents of life, look for the cross in everything. Nothing is too little which relates to man’s salvation, nor is there anything too little in which either to please God or to serve Satan.
