Inspirational Quotes by Robert J. Havighurst (American Researcher)

Robert James Havighurst (1900–91) was an American chemist and physicist, educator, and an expert on human development and aging.

Born in De Pere, Wisconsin, Havighurst graduated from Ohio Wesleyan University and received his doctorate from Ohio State. Trained as a chemist and a physicist, Havighurst was a science education professor. He taught at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, the University of Wisconsin, and Ohio State University before joining the University of Chicago faculty in 1941. He was a professor of education and psychology at the University of Chicago for more than four decades. He retired in 1983 but continued to teach and research until 1990.

Havighurst also wrote books about the transition from adolescence to adulthood and veterans’ adjustment to civilian life. His notable books include Personal Adjustment in Old Age (1949) and The Meaning of Work and Retirement (1954,) and Developmental Tasks and Education (1972.)

Havighurst was an early advocate of integrated public schools and believed they were crucial in creating opportunities for needy children. He was among the first to recommend an extensive decentralization of school authority and creating “schools-within-schools.”
