Tom Smothers (1937–2023,) born Thomas Bolyn Smothers III, was an American comedian, musician, actor, and writer best known as one half of the influential comedy duo The Smothers Brothers alongside his brother Dick. Together they helped redefine television satire in the 1960s, becoming known for sharp political humor and musical performances.
Born in New York City, Smothers studied drama at San Jose State University, where he developed the musical-comedy act that would launch his career. His early professional life began in the folk-music circuit, where he and his brother blended guitar, comedy, and sibling banter into a unique performance style.
Their rising popularity led to television success with The Smothers Brothers Show (1965) and later the groundbreaking variety program Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour (1967–69,) which became known for pushing the boundaries of censorship and political satire. The show was famously cancelled by CBS after the brothers took an outspoken stance against the Vietnam War and in favor of civil rights. Smothers also contributed to written and recorded works, including comedy albums and scripts associated with the show, and appeared in films and television throughout the 1970s and 1980s.
