Inspirational Quotes by Kathleen Winsor (American Novelist)

Kathleen Winsor (1919–2003) was an American novelist. She is best known for her first work, Forever Amber, a racy historical novel that became a runaway bestseller and was widely condemned for depictions of sexuality.

Born in Olivia, Minnesota, Winsor was raised in Berkeley, California, where she attended university. She achieved instant notoriety with Forever Amber (1944; adapted into a film by Otto Preminger, 1947,) a historical saga of the sexually adventurous Amber St. Claire and her lovers in Restoration England.

Although Forever Amber contained no explicit sex scenes, it was highly racy for its time, and it was widely condemned. It sold 100,000 copies its first week and paved the way for the many racy romance novels that followed. Altogether, Forever Amber was the bestselling U.S. novel in the 1940s; it sold more than 3 million copies and was translated into 16 languages.

Winsor wrote seven other novels, including Star Money (1950) and Robert and Arabella (1986.) However, none of Winsor’s subsequent books matched the success of her début.

In 2000, a new edition of Forever Amber was published with a foreword by novelist Barbara Taylor Bradford.
