Inspirational Quotes by Enoch Powell (British Politician)

Enoch Powell (1912–98,) fully John Enoch Powell, was an English Conservative and Ulster Unionist politician and scholar. He is recognized for his denunciation of multiracial immigration into Britain and his opposition to British entry into the Common Market.

Born in Stechford, Birmingham, Powell was educated at King Edward’s School-Birmingham and Trinity College-Cambridge, becoming a professor of Greek at Sydney University (1937–39.) After serving in World War II, he joined the Conservative Party, and in 1950 entered parliament as MP for Wolverhampton. Powell was Parliamentary Secretary, Ministry of Housing 1955–57, Financial Secretary to the Treasury 1957–58, and Minister of Health 1960–63.

Powell’s stark brand of intellectualism, adherence to high Toryism principles in economic planning, and his progressive views on defence and foreign commitments made him a notable figure within his party. He created controversy with his outspoken attitude to non-white immigration and racial integration. Because of his opposition to the Common Market, he did not stand for election in 1974. Still, he returned to parliament as an Ulster Unionist from October 1974 until he was defeated in the 1987 general election.

Powell published numerous academic and political works, including Common Market: The Case Against (1970,) Reflections of a Statesman (1991,) Collected Poems (1990,) and The Evolution of the Gospel (1994.)
