Charles Mathias (1922–2010,) fully Charles McCurdy “Mac” Mathias Jr., was an American politician and attorney. A Republican, he served as a member of the U.S. Senate, representing Maryland 1969–87. He was also a member of the Maryland House of Delegates 1959–60 and the U.S. House of Representatives from Maryland 1961–69.
Born in Frederick, Maryland, Mathias enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1942, attended Yale and Columbia, and earned a bachelor’s degree in 1944. He served in the Philippines and the occupation of Japan before earning his law degree at Maryland.
A liberal Republican, Mathias gained enduring bipartisan respect for his civil rights activism and his conscientious approach to controversial legislation.
