Inspirational Quotes by Davy Crockett (American Frontiersman, Politician)

Davy Crockett (1786–1836,) sobriquet of David Crockett, was an American frontiersman and politician who became a legendary figure and folk hero, particularly to Americans living in the newly settled Midwestern regions of the country.

Born near Greeneville, Tennessee, Crockett grew up on the frontier, frequently moving westward with his family, and had little schooling. He distinguished himself against the Creek Indians in President Andrew Jackson’s campaign of 1814, who was elected to the Tennessee state legislature in 1821. He served in Congress 1827–31 and 1833–35, where his colorful personality and humorous metaphor-filled oratory drew much attention.

Crockett’s significant political efforts included getting free land for frontier settlers, relief for debtors, and expanding the state banking system for Tennessee. Defeated in the 1835 election, he left his home state for Texas, and he died defending the Alamo during the Texas Revolution.

Crockett also engaged in several business ventures and delivered his speeches in conventional English. A series of Crockett almanacs, appearing 1835–56, developed the legend along the lines of Old World folk epics. Crockett’s Autobiography (1834) exaggerated up the backwoods scene and said little about his politics.

I am now here in Congress I am at liberty to vote as my conscience and judgment dictates to be right, without the yoke of any party on me, or the driver at my heels, with his whip in hand, commanding me to ge-wo-haw, just at his pleasure.
