B. Earl Puckett (1898–1976) was an American business executive who retired as chairman of the Allied Stores Corporation, then one of America’s largest department-stores chains.
Puckett started his career as a farm-community schoolteacher and took a correspondence-school course to become a certified public accountant. He joined an auditing and financial consulting firm that specialized in the retail industry. One of his clients recruited Puckett to improve profitability at a chain of retail stores.
Puckett rose up the ranks of retail quickly and eventually became chief executive and chair of the Allied Stores. In 1944, Puckett’s salary of $215,420, the equivalent of $3 million in 2016, placed him in the Treasury Department’s list of the 25 most-paid executives in America.
