Inspirational Quotes by Edmond Rostand (French Dramatist)

Edmond Rostand (1868–1918) was a French dramatist and poet before World War I. His plays provide a final, very belated example of Romantic drama in France.

Born in Marseilles, Rostand published Les Musardises (‘Dawdlings,’) a volume of verse, in 1890, but rose to fame with Cyrano de Bergerac (1897; 1898; translated by Anthony Burgess for Jean-Paul Rappeneau’s film, 1992.) The play revolves around Cyrano’s emotional problems, who, despite a great heart and many gifts, feels that no woman can ever love him because he has the largest nose anyone has ever seen. The play still became a massive hit in France, Europe, and the U.S. On opening night, the audience loved it so much that the standing ovation lasted for a full hour.

Rostand also wrote L’Aiglon (1900,) Chantecler (1910,) and other plays in verse that eschewed the prevailing moods of Naturalism and Expressionism in favor of a lighter, livelier popular style.
