Inspirational Quotes by Lauren Bacall (American Actress)

Lauren Bacall (1924–2014,) originally Betty Joan Perske, was an American actress. She is best known for her marriage to co-star Humphrey Bogart and her portrayals of complicated, sexy, and assertive women who hid their soft-core beneath a layer of toughened pragmatism.

Born in New York City, Bacall became a student at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts and made her stage début in Johnny Two-by-Four (1942.) She was a model before making her film début at 19 opposite Humphrey Bogart in To Have and Have Not (1944.) The pair married, co-starred in such thrillers as The Big Sleep (1946,) Dark Passage (1947,) Key Largo (1948,) and How to Marry a Millionaire (1953) in their 12 years together until he died in 1956.

Bacall then turned increasingly to the theatre, enjoying Broadway successes in Goodbye Charlie (1959,) The Cactus Flower (1965–67,) Applause (1970–72, Tony Award,) and Woman of the Year (1981, Tony award.) Later film appearances include Harper (1966,) Murder on the Orient Express (1974,) The Shootist (1976,) The Mirror Has Two Faces (1996,) and Dogville (2003.) She was married to the actor Jason Nelson Robards Jr. (1961–69.)

Bacall’s memoirs are By Myself (1979; updated as By Myself and Then Some, 2005) and Now (1994.)
