Inspirational Quotes by B. K. S. Iyengar (Indian Hindu Yoga Teacher)

B. K. S. Iyengar (1918–2014,) fully Bellur Krishnamachar Sundararaja Iyengar, was an Indian teacher of yoga. He is widely credited with popularizing yoga in the West.

Born in Bellur, near Bangalore, during the 1918 influenza epidemic, Iyengar was a sickly child who suffered from recurrent bouts of malaria, typhoid, and tuberculosis. He turned to yoga for health and trained under his brother-in-law, T Krishnamacharya. Within two years, Iyengar’s physical condition improved radically, and he began to tour India offering yoga demonstrations.

Over the decades, Iyengar perfected a position-focused yoga practice that stretches muscles and massages the body’s internal organs. His “Iyengar Yoga” method became a global phenomenon, and, today, millions around the world actively follow it.

Iyengar wrote numerous yoga books that became worldwide bestsellers. His Light on Yoga (1966; foreword by violinist Yehudi Menuhin) was the first-ever yoga instruction book to account for theory with practice. The Concise Light on Yoga (Yoga Dipika; 1982) and Yoga: The Path to Holistic Health (2001) emphasized not only precision in the physical performance of yoga, but also healthy lifestyle habits.

Yoga, an ancient but perfect science, deals with the evolution of humanity. This evolution includes all aspects of one’s being, from bodily health to self-realization. Yoga means union—the union of body with consciousness and consciousness with the soul.
