Inspirational Quotes by John Major (British Head of State)

John Major (b.1943) is a British Conservative-party political leader who served as prime minister 1990–97.

Major entered the House of Commons in 1979 after a career in banking and rapidly rose to power during the next decade. In 1989, Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher made him a foreign secretary and then chancellor of the exchequer. Following Thatcher’s resignation, Major emerged as her successor.

Major’s premiership moderated many of the unpopular excesses of Thatcherism and supported the U.S. in the 1991 Gulf War. He directed the joint Downing Street Declaration of the U.K. and Irish governments, which initiated a new peace process in Northern Ireland. He oversaw negotiations leading to the Maastricht Treaty, which ushered the transformation of the European Community into the European Union.

Major led his Conservative party to a crushing defeat by Tony Blair’s Labour party in the 1997 general election. He remained in the House of Commons until 2001, declined to become a member of the House of Lords, and retired from politics. His autobiography, John Major: The Autobiography, appeared in 1999.
