Inspirational Quotes by Euclid (Greek Mathematician)

Euclid (c.300 BCE) was the prominent mathematician of Greco-Roman antiquity, best known for his great treatise on geometry, the Elements. It covered plane geometry, the theory of numbers, irrationals, and solid geometry was the standard work until other kinds of geometry were discovered in the 19th century.

Not much is known of Euclid’s life except that he taught at Alexandria during Ptolemy I Soter, who ruled Egypt 323–285 BCE. His Elements of Geometry, in 13 books, is the earliest substantial Greek mathematical treatise to have survived and is probably better known than any other mathematical book. It is still used as the basis of school textbooks in the earlier part of the 20th century. It was the first mathematical book to be printed and has stood as a model of rigorous mathematical exposition for centuries.

The Elements covers the geometry of lines in the plane, including Pythagoras’s theorem, and discusses circles, ratio, and the geometry of three dimensions. Euclid wrote other works on geometry, including the theory of conics, and astronomy, optics music, and the idea of numbers, irrationals, and solid geometry.
