Inspirational Quotes by Sathya Sai Baba (Indian Hindu Religious Leader)

Satya Sai Baba (1926–2011) was a popular miracle-working Indian Hindu guru and humanitarian. Despite controversy about his conduct, his devotees considered him an avatār (incarnate) of a god.

Born Sathyanarayana Rátnakaru Raju to a poor, farming family in the village of Puṭṭaparti, South India, Sai Baba became famous as a child for materializing sweets for his friends and for finding lost objects. Legend has it that a scorpion bit him at age thirteen. After remaining comatose for some time, he arose as a holy man. He pronounced himself a reincarnate of the first Sai Baba, the Sai Baba of Shirdi (c.1856–1918.)

Over the decades, Sai Baba became a prominent Hindu spiritual leader. He evolved a widespread religious movement, with more than 1,200 āśrams in over 100 countries. His headquarters, Āśrama Prasanti Nilayam in Puṭṭaparti, attracted droves of pilgrims and followers.

Sai Baba’s teachings centered on five “universal human values” that were derived from Hindu principles: love, peace, nonviolence, truth, and duty. He promoted the unity of all religions and encouraged followers to continue to follow their religion of choice. He directed social work, resulting in the building of numerous schools and hospitals. Sai Baba’s trust was worth some $9 billion at the time of his 2011 death.

Notwithstanding all the humanitarian work and his preaching of love and peace, Sai Baba was mired in controversy. Skeptics claimed that the miracles he performed—making jewelry, watches, prayer beads, sacred ash, and other small objects materialize—were no more than simple sleight of hand. In his later years, Sai Baba was accused of sexual misconduct and pedophilia. A 1993 assassination attempt that killed six men was never adequately explained. The Sai Baba movement was, however, mostly unaffected by the controversies and continued to attract influential members to its following.
