George R.R. Martin (b.1948,) fully George Raymond Richard Martin, originally George Raymond Martin, is an American sci-fi and fantasy writer. He is the author of the series of epic fantasy novels A Song of Ice and Fire, adapted into the popular HBO series Game of Thrones (2011–19.)

Born in Bayonne, New Jersey, Martin attended Northwestern University and graduated with bachelor’s and master’s degrees in journalism. He wrote the sci-fi novella A Song for Lya (1974.) In 1976, he started a position teaching journalism at Clarke College in Dubuque, Iowa.

Martin subsequently wrote Dying of the Light (1977,) Sandkings (1981,) Windhaven (1977,) Fevre Dream (1982; vampire novel,) and The Armageddon Rag (1983; rock-and-roll horror tale.) He wrote several screenplays for The Twilight Zone series (1985–89) and Beauty and the Beast (1987–90.)

Martin is most well-known for his best-selling series A Song of Ice and Fire (s.1996,) an epic fantasy series of novels consisting of A Game of Thrones (1996,) A Clash of Kings (1999,) A Storm of Swords (2000,) A Feast for Crows (2005,) and A Dance with Dragons (2011.) Martin also wrote the novellas The Princess and the Queen (2013,) A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms (2014,) and Fire & Blood (2018.)
