Inspirational Quotes by James Dobson (American Psychologist)

James Dobson (1936–2025,) fully James Clayton Dobson Jr., was an American evangelical Christian author, psychologist, and broadcaster, best known as the founder of Focus on the Family (1977–2010.) He became one of the most influential voices of the Christian Right, shaping debates on family values, child-rearing, and social policy in the United States.

Born in Shreveport, Louisiana, Dobson was raised in a deeply religious household. He graduated from Pasadena College (now Point Loma Nazarene University) in 1958 with a degree in psychology, then earned his M.A. (1962) and PhD in child development (1967) from the University of Southern California. He worked for 14 years as a clinical professor of pediatrics at USC’s medical school and as a psychologist at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles. His early career focused on family counseling, where he gained national attention for advocating traditional discipline.

Dobson’s breakthrough came with Dare to Discipline (1970,) which contrasted with Benjamin Spock’s permissive parenting advice and promoted corporal punishment. He followed with Love Must Be Tough (1983,) Parenting Isn’t for Cowards (1987,) and Marriage Under Fire (2004.) His daily radio program Focus on the Family reached millions worldwide, translated into multiple languages and broadcast on thousands of stations. In 1981, he founded the Family Research Council, and later Family Policy Alliance (2004) and Family Talk (2010.) His writings and broadcasts consistently emphasized heterosexual marriage, traditional gender roles, and opposition to feminism and LGBTQ rights, framing these issues as part of a “Civil War of Values.”
