Spike Lee (b.1957,) fully Shelton Jackson Lee, is an American filmmaker, actor, producer, and writer. He gained recognition for his thought-provoking films that delve into race relations, political issues, and urban crime and violence, cementing his position as a significant figure in the cinematic world, contributing to both filmmaking and societal discussions.

Born in Atlanta, Georgia, Lee was raised in Brooklyn, New York, where his passion for cinema took root. After earning a degree in Mass Communication from Morehouse College, he pursued a Master of Fine Arts in Film Production at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts, graduating in 1978.

Lee’s breakthrough came with the release of his first feature film, She’s Gotta Have It (1986,) a groundbreaking work that established him as a prominent figure in the burgeoning independent film scene. Lee’s nonfiction films include The Original Kings of Comedy (2000,) about African American stand-up comedians, When the Levees Broke (2006,) about the U.S. government’s inadequate response to Hurricane Katrina, and NYC Epicenters 9/11→2021½ (2021,) about the impact of the September 11 attacks and the COVID-19 pandemic on New York City. Beyond filmmaking, Lee has also been a vocal advocate for diversity in the film industry and a champion of social justice causes.
