Audrey Niffenegger (b.1963) is an American author and visual artist known for her captivating novels and unique blend of literary and visual storytelling. She is best known for her first full-length prose fiction, The Time-Traveler’s Wife (2003,) which was adapted into the film The Time Traveler’s Wife (2009) and later made into a television series with six episodes in 2022.

Born in South Haven, Michigan, Niffenegger earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (1985) and her Master of Fine Arts from Northwestern University (1991.) While writing The Time Traveler’s Wife, Niffenegger lived in Chicago and taught writing, letterpress printing, and fine-edition book production at the Interdisciplinary Book Arts MFA Program at the Columbia College Chicago Center for Book and Paper Arts.

Niffenegger’s breakthrough came with the publication of her debut novel, The Time Traveler’s Wife, featuring a protagonist with a genetic condition called chrono-displacement, allowing her to experience several timeslips. She also authored the fantasy graphic novels The Adventuress (2005) and The Night Bookmobile (2010.) Her later works include Three Incestuous Sisters (2005,) Her Fearful Symmetry (2009,) Raven Girl (2013,) Ghostly: A Collection of Ghost Stories (2015,) and Bizarre Romance (2018.)

In addition to her novels, Niffenegger is a visual storyteller, creating intricate and dreamlike illustrations, often exploring themes of love, loss, and the passage of time. Her art has been exhibited in galleries and museums worldwide.
