Inspirational Quotes by Gottfried Bohm (German Architect)

Gottfried Böhm (1920–2021) was a German architect and sculptor who combined traditional architectural styles with modern materials and sculptural forms to create unique Expressionist sculptures that were gracefully integrated into their landscapes.

Born in Offenbach-am-Main, near Frankfurt, Gottfried followed in the footsteps of his father and grandfather, who were both architects. Böhm served the Wehrmacht 1939–42, and then studied architecture at the Technical University in Munich, graduating in 1946.

After a year of studying sculpture at the city’s Academy of Arts, Böhm joined the family firm in Cologne. His first project there was Madonna in the Ruins (1949,) a chapel on a bombed-out medieval church site. In 1950, he joined the team charged with Cologne’s postwar reconstruction.

Böhm designed more than 60 churches across Germany and administrative buildings, department stores, festival halls, and housing projects that exude his unique Expressionist style, informed by his training as a sculptor. His most famous buildings are Neviges Pilgrimage Church (1968,) Town Hall in Bensberg (1969,) The Diocesan Museum in Paderborn (1975,) Town Hall (Rathaus) in Rheinberg (1980,) Deutsche Bank in Luxembourg (1991,) Peek and Cloppenburg clothing store in Berlin (1995,) Ulm library (2000,) and The Hans Otto Theater in Potsdam (2006.)

Böhm won the Pritzker in 1986. The Böhm architecture family was the subject of the documentary Die Böhms: Architektur einer Familie (2014; Concrete Love.)
