Inspirational Quotes by Jim Lehrer (American Television Journalist)

Jim Lehrer (1934–2020,) fully James Charles Lehrer, was an American television journalist, novelist, screenwriter, and playwright. Lehrer was a Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) anchor for 36 years, founding PBS NewsHour with Robert MacNeil.

Born in Wichita, Kansas, Lehrer graduated in journalism from the University of Missouri in 1956 and served three years in the U.S. Marines. He worked 1959–70 at the Dallas Morning News and the now-defunct Dallas Times-Herald.

Lehrer transferred to television for a Dallas nightly broadcast. Moving to Washington, D.C., he became a public affairs director for PBS and a reporter for the National Public Affairs Center for Television. Lehrer paired with Robert MacNeil in 1973 to present live coverage of congressional hearings on the Watergate Scandal for PBS.

In 1983, MacNeil and Lehrer started The MacNeil/Lehrer NewsHour, an in-depth news presentation on PBS. The program was renamed The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer when MacNeil retired in 1973. It assumed a multi-anchor format in 2009 and became PBS NewsHour. In 2011, Lehrer stepped down as its regular anchor.

As a debate-moderator during American presidential election campaigns, Lehrer was well known for supervising a record twelve presidential debates 1988–2012.

Lehrer authored various fiction and non-fiction books that drew upon his experience as a reporter and his history and political interests. His memoirs include A Bus of My Own (1992.)

Take risks … be willing to put your mind and your spirit, your time and your energy, your stomach and your emotions on the line. To search for a safe place, to search for an end to a rainbow, is to search for a place that you will hate once you find it. The soul must be nourished along with the bank account and the resume. The best nourishment for any soul is to create your own risks.
