Junot Díaz (b.1968) is a Dominican-American writer and professor celebrated for his contributions to contemporary literature. His work highlights the history of his country and the experiences of its emigrants, including the lasting influence of Dominican dictator Rafael Trujillo.
Born in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, Díaz moved to New Jersey when he was six years old. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Rutgers University and immediately created the Spanglish-speaking, street-character Yunior, who served as the narrator of several of his later books. He later obtained his MFA from Cornell University.
Díaz is best known for his distinctive narrative style, combining vivid, streetwise prose with elements of science fiction, social commentary, and cultural exploration. His debut collection of short stories, Drown (1996,) and his critically acclaimed novel, The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao (2007; Pulitzer, 2008,) explore themes of identity, immigration, and cultural assimilation, resonating with readers around the world.
Díaz is a prominent voice in discussions of race, ethnicity, and the immigrant experience in the United States. He is known for his unapologetic and often humorous approach to addressing complex issues. In addition to his writing, Díaz has taught creative writing at institutions such as MIT and Boston University. He also wrote the story collection This Is How You Lose Her (2012) and the children’s book Islandborn (2018.)
