Inspirational Quotes by Alexander Bain (Scottish Philosopher)

Alexander Bain (1818–1903) was a Scottish empirical philosopher, psychologist, and educationalist. An important figure in psychology, linguistics, logic, moral philosophy, and education reform, he advanced psychology with his work on mental processes and attempted to improve education in Scotland.

Born in Aberdeen, Bain later became a professor of logic (1860–81.) He was one of an intellectual circle, which included philosopher John Stuart Mill and historian George Grote. Bain wrote books about both the former and his father, philosopher James Mill.

Bain’s most important works are The Senses and the Intellect (1855,) The Emotions and the Will (1859,) On the Study of Character (1861,) and Mental and Moral Science (1868.) He also founded the Mind (1876,) the first-ever journal of psychology and analytical philosophy. His psychology was firmly based on physiology. He sought to explain the mind through a physical theory of the association of ideas.

Bain also wrote John Stuart Mill: A Criticism, with Personal Recollections (1882) and an Autobiography (1904.)
