Sir Frederick Treves, 1st Baronet (1853–1923,) was a British surgeon and anatomy expert best known for his advancements in appendicitis treatment and his profound impact on medical care.

Born in Dorchester, Dorset, Treves received his education in London and later became a professor at the Royal College of Surgeons. He contributed significantly to the medical field, founding the British Red Cross Society and improving surgical techniques for appendicitis.

Treves gained prominence through his care and companionship for Joseph Merrick, famously known as the “Elephant Man.” He brought attention to Merrick’s humanity and condition, challenging societal prejudice. His accounts were immortalized in the memoir The Elephant Man and Other Reminiscences (1923.) He also played a critical role in saving King Edward VII’s life, performing a timely appendectomy just days before the King’s 1902 coronation.
