Inspirational Quotes by Angela Thirkell (English Novelist)

Angela Margaret Thirkell (1890–1961,) née Mackall, was an English and Australian novelist. She authored 30 lighthearted novels about English middle- and upper-class life in the fictional Barsetshire, dealing with descendants of characters in Anthony Trollope’s novels set in the same fictional locale.

Born in London, Thirkell was the daughter of the classical scholar John William Mackail, granddaughter of the painter Edward Burne-Jones, and cousin of writer Rudyard Kipling. Her son was the novelist Colin Macinnes (1914–79.)

Thirkell’s novels feature refined, snobbish characters. Her works are noted for their delicate irony, absurdity of tone, and understated sophistication. Some of her better-known novels include Coronation Summer (1937,) Pomfret Towers (1938,) The Brandons (1939,) Northbridge Rectory (1941,) Growing Up (1943,) Headmistress (1945,) Miss Bunting (1946,) and The Duke’s Daughter (1951.)

Thirkell published one novel, Trooper to Southern Cross (1934; republished as What Happened on the Boat,) under the pseudonym Leslie Parker. She also wrote The Fortunes of Harriette: The Surprising Career of Harriette Wilson (1936) and contributed short stories to periodicals in Australia and Great Britain.

Margot Strickland wrote the biography Angela Thirkell: Portrait of a Lady Novelist (1972.)
