Inspirational Quotes by Charles G. Dawes (American Diplomat, Politician)

Charles G. Dawes (1865–1951,) fully Charles Gates Dawes, was an American diplomat. This co-recipient of the 1925 Nobel Peace Prize was also a Republican politician who served as the 30th vice president of the U.S. 1925–29.

Born in Marietta, Ohio, Dawes studied at Marietta College and Cincinnati Law School and was admitted to the Bar. He gained administrative experience as brigadier-general in charge of military procurement for U.S. forces in France in World War I and was appointed director of the Budget in 1921.

Dawes was head of the commission that drew up the Dawes Plan (1924) to reduce and reorganize German reparation payments. He shared the 1925 Nobel Peace Prize with British statesman Austen Chamberlain for negotiating the Locarno Pact, whereby Germany, France, Belgium, Great Britain, and Italy reciprocally guaranteed peace in Western Europe.

Dawes served as Republican vice-president (1925–29) under Calvin Coolidge and later became the American ambassador to Great Britain.

Dawes’s works include A Journal of the Great War (1921,) Notes as Vice President (1935,) and A Journal of Reparations (1939.) American newspaperman Bascom N Timmons wrote Portrait of an American: Charles G Dawes (1953.)
