Inspirational Quotes by Peter Cundill (Canadian Investor)

Francis Peter Cundill (1938–2011) was a Canadian investor, diarist, and philanthropist based in Vancouver. He was most noted for his flagship investment fund, Cundill Value Fund, which he operated in the Benjamin Graham value investing style.

Born in Montreal, Cundill gained a Bachelor of Commerce degree from McGill University in 1960 and qualified as a Chartered Accountant. After working several years as a senior executive of the Yorkshire Trust Group in Vancouver, he gained control in 1975 of an All Canadian Fund’s mutual fund. He renamed it Cundill Value Fund and adopted the value investment style propounded by the American investor Benjamin Graham. Cundill produced a compound annual return of 13.2% over 35 years and saw the assets managed by his firm increase from $7 million to $20 billion.

Since 1963, Cundill kept a daily journal for more than 40 years. He produced There’s Always Something to Do: The Peter Cundill Investment Approach (2011) and the biography Routines and Orgies: The Life of Peter Cundill, Financial Genius, Philosopher, and Philanthropist (2014.)

Cundill established the Cundill History Prize at the McGill University-Montreal to recognize and reward the best history writing in English. The Peter Cundill Foundation supports charities, research projects, and educational and enterprise gifts to young people.

Curiosity is the engine of civilization. If I were to elaborate it would be to say read, read, read, and don’t forget to talk to people, really talk, listening with attention and having conversations, on whatever topic, that are an exchange of thoughts. Keep the reading broad, beyond just the professional. This helps to develop one’s sense of perspective in all matters.
