Inspirational Quotes by Auguste Comte (French Philosopher)

Auguste Comte (1798–1857,) fully Isidore Marie Auguste François Xavier Comte, was a French philosopher and one of the founders of sociology. Comte’s positivist philosophy endeavored to define social evolution laws and found a genuine social science for social reconstruction.

Born in Montpellier, Comte was educated at the École Polytechnique in Paris (1814–16.) He taught mathematics and, from 1818, was influenced by the utopian socialist Henri de Saint-Simon. In 1826, he started teaching philosophy but suffered a breakdown. He was primarily supported by social thinkers such as John Stuart Mill and George Eliot (Mary Anne Evans).

Comte is considered the founder of positivism, an ideology that asserted all knowledge should be based on scientific observation and theoretical coordination. His two major works were Cours de Philosophie Positive (6 vols., 1830–42) and Système de politique positive (4 vols., 1851–54, ‘System of Positive Philosophy.’) His Positivism sought to expound on the laws of social evolution; it describes the organization and hierarchy of all branches of human knowledge, and establishes an actual science of society as a basis for social planning and regeneration.

British secular humanist Frederick James Gould wrote the biography Auguste Comte (1920.)
