Inspirational Quotes by Douglas McGregor (American Sociologist)

Douglas McGregor (1906–64,) fully Douglas Murray McGregor, was an American sociologist and an industrial psychologist. A student of psychologist Abraham Maslow, McGregor conceived ‘Theory X and Theory Y’ to describe contrasting ways of motivating workers—the theory-x manager is authoritarian and concentrates on productivity. The theory-y manager is liberating and focuses on people.

Born in Detroit, Michigan, McGregor earned a doctorate in psychology at Harvard University (1935) and taught there before moving to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) to help set up an industrial relations section in 1937. He was president of Antioch College (1948–54) and then returned to MIT to become the first Sloan Fellows Professor (1962.)

McGregor contributed much to the development of the management and motivational theory and is best known for his ‘Theory X and Theory Y’ as presented in his book The Human Side of Enterprise (1960,) which proposed that manager’s individual assumptions about human nature and behavior, determined how an individual manages their employees.

McGregor’s unfinished book The Professional Manager was published posthumously in 1969.
