Harry Houdini (1874–1926,) born Erik Weisz, was an Austro-Hungarian-born American stage magician, stunt performer, and escapologist. In the early 1900s, he became notorious for his ability to break out from all kinds of bonds and containers, from prison cells to aerially floating straitjackets. He borrowed his name from Jean Eugène Robert-Houdin, the exceptional French magician who is considered the father of the modern style of conjuring.
