Inspirational Quotes by Heinrich Zschokke (Swiss Writer, Reformer)

Heinrich Zschokke (1771–1848,) fully Johann Heinrich Daniel Zschokke, was a German, later Swiss, author, reformer, politician, and pedagogue. He had an extensive civil service career and wrote histories, fiction, and other well-known works.

Born in Magdeburg, Germany, Zschokke became a strolling playwright, then a student at Frankfurt. He also lectured and adapted plays and finally opened a boarding school at Reichenau in the Orisons. In 1799, he settled in Aarau, where he became a member of the Great Council.

Zschokke’s books include histories of Bavaria and Switzerland and a long series of tales, including Der Creole (1830; The Creole, 1846,) Jonathan Frock (1840,) and Meister Jordan (1845; Labour Stands on Golden Feet, 1852.)

The most popular of his works was the Stunden der Andacht (1809–16; Hours of Meditation, 1843,) a Sunday periodical expounding rationalism with eloquence and zeal. His collected writings fill 35 volumes (1851–54.)
