Inspirational Quotes by Nadia Comaneci (Romanian-American Gymnast)

Nadia Elena Comăneci (b.1961) is a Romanian-born gymnast who immigrated to America in 1989. At the 1976 Olympic Games at the age of 14, she became the first gymnast to be awarded a perfect score of 10 in an Olympic event.

Born in Gheorghe Gheorghiu-Dej, now Onești, Comăneci trained with Coach Béla Károlyi and entered her first professional competition at age nine. At the 1976 Olympics in Montreal, she had seven perfect 10.0 scores and won three gold medals.

Comăneci scored the first Olympic perfect ten at the Asymmetric Bars. The official scoreboard could display only three digits, and Comăneci’s perfect score was declared as 1.00 and not 10.00. She became a global celebrity after her routine on the Uneven Bars was judged flawless.

Comăneci’s success in gymnastics continued for another five years until she retired from the competition in 1981. Comăneci had won 21 Gold medals, 7 Silver, and 2 Bronze during this time. Later she became an international judge and coach to the Romanian national team.

In 1989, a few weeks before the uprising in Romania, Comăneci defected with a group of other young Romanians to the U.S. through Hungary and Austria. Her autobiography is Nadia (1981,) and her book on mentoring gymnasts is Letters to a Young Gymnast (2003.)
