Inspirational Quotes by Arthur Seldon (British Economist)

Arthur Seldon (1916–2005,) born Abraham Margolis, was a British economist and writer. A libertarian economist, his works inspired Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher’s free-market revolution.

Born in the East End of London, Seldon was orphaned at the age of three during the flu epidemic of 1918. He was adopted by a childless cobbler and his wife, who, like his parents, were Russian-Jewish immigrants. He attended the London School of Economics, where he studied with Lionel Robbins and Friedrich Hayek, who taught classical liberal economics.

After graduating with honors, Seldon worked in a government survey research unit. In 1940, he joined the Army, serving in Africa and Italy 1942–45. After the war, he taught, edited a trade journal called Store, and researched the beer industry. In 1957, he founded the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA) 1957 with the entrepreneur Anthony Fisher the economist Ralph Harris.

Seldon served as IEA’s editorial director at the institute 1957–88. Seldon commissioned and edited a stream of booklets, periodicals, and other publications that played a considerable part in modifying the mindset of policymakers and commentators in Britain. He influenced the policies of Margaret Thatcher when she became prime minister in 1979.

Seldon published such authors as Friedrich Hayek and Milton Friedman. Seldon co-wrote Pensions in a Free Society (1957,) Advertising in a Free Society (1959,) and wrote Pensions for Prosperity (1960.)

Seldon’s publications include Corrigible Capitalism, Incorrigible Socialism (1980,) Wither the Welfare State (1981,) Socialism Explained (1983,) The New Right Enlightenment (1985,) The Riddle of the Voucher (1986,) and Capitalism (1990; 1991 Fisher Prize.)
