Inspirational Quotes by James S. McDonnell (American Engineer)

James Smith McDonnell (1899–1980,) in full James Smith McDonnell, Jr., was an American aerospace engineer and executive. He was the founder of McDonnell Aircraft Corporation, and he later spearheaded its merger with Douglas Aircraft Company in 1967.

Born in Denver, Colorado, McDonnell Princeton University in 1921, and earned a Master’s of Science in Aeronautical Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (1925.) He then worked as an airplane designer at the Ford Motor Company, Hamilton Metalplane Company, and then Huff Daland Airplane Company. In 1928, he launched his own design firm, J.S. McDonnell & Associates, with two colleagues. They dissolved the company during the depression years, instead choosing to work for the Great Lakes Aircraft Company and the Glenn L. Martin Company.

In 1939, McDonnell founded McDonnell Aircraft Corporation, which prospered from military contracts during World War II. McDonnell built one of the most successful government-contracted industrial space and aircraft production businesses in the U.S. His company also produced FH Phantom jet fighters, the Mercury Space Capsule, and the Gemini spacecraft. In 1967, McDonnell orchestrated the merger with Douglas Aircraft to form McDonnell-Douglas, one of the largest military aircraft manufacturers in the U.S. McDonnell served as its chairman (1967–80) and oversaw the development of the F-15 Eagle and F/A-18 Hornet fighters and the DC-10 commercial airplane.

McDonnell also founded the James S. McDonnell Foundation (s.1950) to fund scientific, educational, and other philanthropic initiatives.
