Inspirational Quotes by David Hare (British Playwright, Director)

Sir David Hare (b.1947) is a British dramatist, director, and filmmaker. He is celebrated for his political dramas that British society in the post-World War II era, such as Plenty (1978,) centering on intense, self-destructive characters.

Born in Bexhill, Sussex, Hare graduated from Jesus College, Cambridge, and was active in fringe theatre for many years, co-founding Portable Theatre in 1968 and Joint Stock in 1974. He succeeded playwright Christopher Hampton as a resident dramatist and literary manager of the Royal Court Theatre in London (1969–71,) and at Nottingham Playhouse in 1973, before becoming associate director of the National Theatre, London (1984.)

Hare’s Slag was staged in 1970, The Great Exhibition in 1972 and Knuckle in 1974, but the best of his early works is Teeth ‘n’ Smiles (1975,) a commentary on the state of modern Britain. Racing Demon (1990) and Murmuring Judges (1991) were the first two parts of a trilogy about British institutions.

Hare’s plays often have linked films, such as The Secret Rapture (1988) and the complementary political film Paris by Night (1988.) His television films include Dreams of Leaving (1980,) Saigon … Year of the Cat (1983,) and the play Heading Home (1991.) He wrote and directed his first feature film, Wetherby, in 1985.

Hare’s later plays include The Absence of War (1993,) Skylight (1995,) and The Judas Kiss (1998.) The Blue Room, his 1998 adaptation of Austrian dramatist Arthur Schnitzler’s La Ronde, enjoyed international success following a London production starring Nicole Kidman. His play about the Iraq war, Stuff Happens (2004,) has been performed worldwide. He was knighted in 1998.

Hare’s The Blue Touch Paper (2015) is a memoir of his early life and career.
