Inspirational Quotes by Mae Jemison (American Physician, Astronaut)

Mae Carol Jemison (b.1956) is an American physician who was the first African American woman to become an astronaut. She orbited the earth for over a week in 1992 in the space shuttle Endeavour.

Born in Decatur, Alabama, Jemison grew up in Chicago. She earned degrees in chemical engineering and African American studies from Stanford University. Jemison later studied medicine at Cornell University, worked as a general practitioner in a Los Angeles medical group, and served in Africa with the Peace Corps.

In 1986, Jemison became one of 15 (out of 2,000 applicants) chosen by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to be an astronaut. Jemison’s maiden space flight was the weeklong September 1992 mission of Endeavour. After her NASA mission, Jemison formed the Jemison Group to invent and market state-of-the-art technologies.

Jemison’s autobiography is Find Where the Wind Goes: Moments from My Life (2001.)
