Maureen “Mauro” Murphy (1940–2018) was a British-born Australian comedian, actress, and television personality celebrated for her energetic stage presence, rapid-fire wit, and inventive blend of stand-up and visual humor. She rose to prominence in the United States during the 1980s, appearing on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson, HBO specials, An Evening at the Improv, and The Dom DeLuise Show, where her bold comedic style quickly made her a standout performer.
Born in London, Murphy spent her childhood in Rhodesia and Australia, experiences that shaped her eclectic sense of humor. After moving to Hollywood, she briefly performed with her sister as the “Digeridoo Sisters,” a quirky act that highlighted their shared flair for eccentric comedy. Though she did not pursue a traditional academic path, her exposure to diverse cultures and performance traditions deeply influenced her comedic voice. Her routines often featured live caricature sketching, physical comedy, and sharp observational humor, earning her recognition in both Australian and American entertainment circles.
Murphy’s breakthrough on The Tonight Show brought her a devoted following and opened doors to film roles, including appearances in Roxanne (1987) and Tall, Dark & Handsome (1987.) Later in life, she collaborated with her mother on a long-developing film project, ultimately released as Caravaggio and My Mother the Pope (2018.)
