Inspirational Quotes by Archilochus (Greek Poet)

Archilochus of Paras (f.714–676 BCE) was a Greek lyric poet of the Archaic period and a soldier. He is considered the first lyric poet, and he wrote elegies and hymns. He wrote satirical verses and fables and is credited with the invention of the iambic meter.

Born in Paros in the Greek Cyclades, Archilochus was the son of a wealthy Parian who founded a settlement on the island of Thasos. Per the ancient biographical tradition, particulars of Archilochus’s life are derived for the most part from his poems—an unreliable source because the events he described may have been fictitious or may have involved imaginary personae or ritual situations.

Archilochus was the earliest Greek writer of iambic, elegiac, and personal lyric poetry whose works have survived considerably. The surviving fragments of his work show him to have been a metrical innovator of the highest ability.

Archilochus is the earliest known Greek author to compose almost entirely on the theme of his own emotions and experiences. He was acclaimed in his day as equal in stature to Homer, Pindar, and Sophocles; Plato called him ‘the very wise.’

Archilochus is said to have died in a battle between Paros and Naxos.
