Inspirational Quotes by Daniel O’Connell (Irish Statesman)

Daniel O’Connell (1775–1847,) byname The Liberator, was an Irish nationalist leader and social reformer. He was the most significant influence in the emergence of Irish political nationalism.

Born near Cahirciveen, County Kerry, O’Connell was a prosperous barrister. Leader of the agitation for the rights of Catholics, he was elected to Parliament in 1828. The British government was forced to grant Catholic Emancipation to enable him to take his seat in the House of Commons. In 1839, he established the Repeal Association to abolish the union with Britain. O’Connell was arrested and imprisoned for three months because of the conspiracy to raise a sedition in 1844.

O’Connell contended with dissent at home with a growing agrarian crisis and the Great Irish Famine. Criticism of his political compromises and patronage system led to a split in the national movement he had singularly led previously. He left Ireland for the last time in January 1847 and died in Genoa on his way to Rome.

Irish historian Dennis Rolleston Gwynn wrote the biography Daniel O’Connell, The Irish Liberator (1930.)

Bigotry has no head, and cannot think; no heart, and cannot feel. When she moves, it is in wrath; when she pauses it is amidst ruin; her prayers are curses—her God is a demon—her communion is death.
