Inspirational Quotes by Fidel Castro (Cuban Political Leader)

Fidel Castro (1927–2016,) fully Fidel Alejandro Castro Ruz, was a Cuban political leader, prime minister 1959–76, and president 1976–2008. He transformed his country into the first communist state in the Western Hemisphere. Castro became a symbol of the communist revolution in Latin America and was one of the key players in the confrontation between the west and the communist bloc.

Born near Birán, Castro studied law and practiced in Havana. He fought cases on behalf of the poor and against the official corruption and oppression rife under President Fulgencio Batista. He led an unsuccessful rising and was sentenced to 15 years’ imprisonment.

Released under an amnesty within a year, Castro fled to the U.S. and Mexico, all the time organizing anti-Batista activities. In 1956, he landed in Cuba with a small band of insurgents and waged a relentless guerrilla campaign in the Sierra Maestra Mountains. The degeneration of Cuba into a police state brought many recruits to his cause, and in 1958, he mounted a full-scale attack, and Batista was forced to flee.

Castro set up a communist regime that survived the abortive Bay of Pigs invasion, the Cuban Missile Crisis, and the collapse of the Soviet bloc. In 2008, he stood down in favor of his brother Raúl Castro.

German journalist Volker Skierka wrote Fidel Castro: A Biography (2004.)
