Harold Evans (1925–2020,) fully Sir Harold Matthew Evans, was a British-American journalist and writer. One of the most revered newspaper editors of his generation, he was admired for his devotion to investigative reporting at The Sunday Times. Under Evans’ leadership 1967–81, the newspaper became a beacon for its crusading journalism. It supported the thalidomide pharmaceutical scandal victims and exposed British intelligence officer Kim Philby as a Soviet spy.

Born in Manchester, Evans began as a weekly reporter at the age of 16 and then studied at Durham University and the University of Chicago. He worked on the Manchester Evening News and the Northern Echo before becoming editor of The Sunday Times 1967–81.

Evans was a pioneer of investigative journalism prominently during the thalidomide scandal. He fought for compensation for mothers who took the morning sickness drug and gave birth to children with seriously deformed limbs. He was the editor of The Times (1981–82) but resigned after its contentious takeover by Rupert Murdoch’s News International.

Evans moved to New York, became the chief editor of Traveler magazine for Condé Nast in 1986, and ran Random House 1990–97. From 1998, he was the editorial director and vice-chairman of the New York Daily News and U.S. News and World Report, retiring in 1999 to concentrate on writing books. He married English writer and magazine editor Tina Brown in 1981.

Evans’s books include Good Times, Bad Times (1983,) The American Century (1998,) They Made America (2004) and Do I Make Myself Clear?: Why Writing Well Matters (2018.)
