Inspirational Quotes by Julia Child (American Cook, Author)

Julia McWilliams Child (1912–2004,) née Julia Carolyn McWilliams, was an American chef, cookbook author, and television personality. She familiarized Americans with traditional French cuisine through her bestselling books and television programs, transforming what many had seen as tedium into an art.

Born in Pasadena, California, and educated at Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts, Child volunteered with the Office of Strategic Services, a wartime intelligence agency. When her husband was posted in Paris after World War II, Child attended a culinary school in Paris and later founded a cooking school for housewives. Her cookbooks, beginning with Mastering the Art of French Cooking (2 vols., 1961, 1970,) and her television cooking show The French Chef, which began on PBS in 1963, revolutionized American cooking.

Child’s autobiography, My Life in France, was published posthumously in 2006. Julie and Julia (2005; film 2009) detailed Child’s life in Paris and her burgeoning culinary career; Child was played by the actress Meryl Streep, who earned an Oscar nomination for her performance.

Cooking is just as creative and imaginative an activity as drawing, or wood carving, or music. And cooking draws upon your every talent—science, mathematics, energy, history, experience—and the more experience you have, the less likely are your experiments to end in drivel and disaster.
