Inspirational Quotes by Beatrix Potter (British Children’s Author)

Beatrix Potter (1866–1943,) fully Helen Beatrix Potter, was an English author, illustrator, natural scientist, and conservationist. One of the world’s best-selling and best-loved children’s authors, she is celebrated as the creator of Peter Rabbit, Jeremy Fisher, Jemima Puddle-Duck, Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle, and other animal characters that have become classics of children’s literature.

Born into a wealthy family in South Kensington, Middlesex, now in Greater London, Potter was brought up by nurses and educated by governesses. She taught herself to draw and paint. While still young, she undertook serious natural history studies of fungi to make a book of watercolors.

She turned to sketch pet animals dressed as human beings to amuse younger children. She created a series of animal stories, illustrated with her own delicate watercolors, beginning with The Tale of Peter Rabbit (first published privately in 1900.) It was followed by The Tale of Squirrel Nutkin (1903,) The Tale of Benjamin Bunny (1904,) and The Tale of Jemima Puddle-Duck (1908.) Her books feature realism—her animal world is continuously threatened by deceit, physical harm, and death.

All told, Potter wrote 28 books, and she donated more than 4,000 acres of farmland to the National Trust. Her property now makes up the Lake District National Park.

Actor Leslie Linder, a Beatrix fan, edited The Journal of Beatrix Potter (1966.) British journalist Margaret Lane wrote The Tale of Beatrix Potter (1946) and The Magic Years of Beatrix Potter (1978.)
